San Francisco, Aug 12 – OpenAI, the renowned creator of the chatbot ChatGPT, is experiencing significant leadership changes, with only two of its original 11 founding members remaining. On August 5, co-founder John Schulman resigned to join rival AI startup Anthropic, while another co-founder and President Greg Brockman announced a sabbatical that will last until the end of the year.
According to various media reports, Schulman revealed his departure through a post on the social platform X, stating his intention to join Anthropic, a competing AI company based in the United States. Schulman explained that his decision was motivated by a desire to focus more on aligning AI with human values and to return to hands-on technical work.
On the same day, Brockman declared his plans to take an extended leave of absence, during which he will miss several key OpenAI events, including the global Developer Days planned for October 1. This news follows the earlier departures of other co-founders, including former Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever in May and Andrej Karpathy in February, who left to establish an AI-integrated education platform.
With these exits, OpenAI has now seen three co-founders depart this year alone, leaving only two of the original founders, including current CEO Sam Altman. The company had already experienced earlier departures, including Elon Musk, further reducing the number of its founding team members.
