(Beijing, Sept 7) – China’s tech giant Huawei opened pre-orders for its first tri-fold smartphone on Saturday, and within just four hours, over 900,000 people had reserved the device.
According to reports from Securities Times and Fast Technology, Huawei announced that pre-orders for its Huawei Mate XT Extraordinary Master Edition, the brand’s first tri-fold smartphone, started at 12:08 PM on Saturday.
The company also revealed the phone’s design, featuring a unique lens texture and a distinctive small gold logo.
This new flagship phone is set to be officially unveiled next Tuesday (September 10) during a Huawei product launch event, where it will go head-to-head with Apple’s iPhone 16. The price of the Mate XT will be revealed at the event, and the device will officially go on sale at 10:08 AM on September 20.
Huawei’s online store showed that within a short time of the pre-order launch, reservations had already reached 440,000. Despite the price and detailed specifications, including the processor, not yet being disclosed, consumer enthusiasm remains high. By 4:42 PM, just over four hours after pre-orders opened, over 926,000 people had signed up, and the numbers were still rapidly increasing.
Huawei also unveiled official images of the phone, which features a “Z” shaped tri-fold design with both inward and outward folding and dual hinges. The rear camera module has an octagonal shape.
The phone offers three folding options: fully unfolded, fully folded, and folded on just one side.
According to CITIC Securities, the Mate XT’s internal display will reach 10 inches (25.4 cm) when fully unfolded, which is a 50% increase compared to typical folding phones, offering a user experience comparable to a tablet.
Aside from online orders, videos on Chinese social media platform Weibo show long queues forming outside Huawei’s Wuhan stores, where people are eagerly waiting to pre-order the phone.
Huawei’s tri-fold phone has been drawing significant attention since rumors of its release began circulating. Huawei’s Consumer Business Group CEO, Richard Yu, described the Mate XT as a “revolutionary product that others envisioned but couldn’t achieve.” He added that the product represents five years of persistence and innovation, turning science fiction into reality.
